The Centre for Marine Biofouling and Corrosion provides a complete biofouling management programme for your device(s) from design, technology selection and maintenance. Biofouling surveys

A rapid biofouling survey will provide you with device specific information describing growth rates, high risk components and systems; inform optimised antifouling measures and maintenance scheduling. The Centre has a strong track record of conducting biofouling surveys in high energy environments to enable our clients to make informed decisions about the most effective way of predicting and dealing with their biofouling challenges. 

Coating selection advice

Antifouling coating selection is one of the most important choices a Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) device operator can make to secure the long-term and trouble-free operation of their device. 

Selecting the correct coating system and coating maintenance programme for your device can prevent problematic biofouling and corrosion issues. Asset protection is particularly important in extreme high energy environments where device intervention is costly and challenging. 

The Centre works with a number of clients within the MRE industry and has an exceptional track record in antifouling technology screening for high energy environments. We can help decide what to test, how to test it, and how to keep your device in the water for longer, saving you time and money.

Niche area biofouling management

Antifouling coatings are not the only answer for biofouling prevention on Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) infrastructure. 

Most devices have niche areas, such as flooded internal spaces or critical components, e.g. heat exchangers or connectors and sensors, where conventional antifouling coating approaches simply won’t work. Failure of these areas or components, caused by blocking or obscuring by biofouling, can result in costly device recovery action being required and significant downtime.

The Centre works to ensure that before your device is deployed the critical areas are identified and adequately protected from biofouling issues. We have worked with a number of clients in the MRE sector and other industries to help to prevent niche critical component areas from failure due to biofouling.

Transporting and decommissioning of infrastructure

When transporting or decommissioning Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) infrastructure it is a legal requirement to be aware of environmentally threatening biofouling on the infrastructure. 

Guidelines for the removal of biofouling and for movements of marine infrastructure are in place to protect the marine environment from the trans-location of potentially harmful non-native marine organisms. Ensuring your device is free of potentially invasive non-native species before decommissioning and relocating the infrastructure is vital to protecting the marine environment.

The Centre provides specialist advice to support MRE device operators during the mobilisation  decommissioning phase to ensure that you can operate with confidence and demonstrate due diligence to third party stakeholders in terms of biofouling management.
